  • Sale-ing through the garage…

    garage-sale

    Today we did the dreaded garage sale. It’s not really dreaded, just procrastinated. Although having a garage sale is not the most fun in the world…it provides two great benefits. 1) I get rid of some clutter and 2) we make us some moo-la. With a few exceptions my garage sales are usually very successful. One dismal failure in CA I blamed on location, and one in AZ that I also blamed on location. I’ve had boxes in my garage since our move. Things that I found while unpacking, and thought “why the heck did I even bring this”.  We also went through closets and bedrooms in the last couple of months. What I thought was a small collection of junk really turned out to be a good garage sale collection. We made our signs, and got up early this morning. We had pretty good traffic, and although we got off to a slow start we had great success. All the big items went by late morning and by the time we closed at 1:30 we left with just the bare bones. We boxed that up in 3 moving boxes and hauled it off to Goodwill. One rule I have is once it’s been out to the garage sale it doesn’t come back into the house (with big ticket items being the few exceptions).

    After that Squirt had some friends over for a movie night. 4 teenage boys, 3 teenage girls — the volume level definitely increased around here! Unfortunately Squirt’s best friend bailed on her. They had planned this together about mid-week, but “Candi” decided that she would rather hang out with her new friend tonight instead, so just told Squirt she couldn’t make it. Candi has done a lot of things I don’t approve of since meeting her new friend “K” – which have include harassing Squirt via texts and phone, saying ugly things, ditching her when they had plans and then pretending the next time her friend K isn’t available, that nothing happened. Squirt is having a hard time adjusting, but is working on exploring new friendships and getting more involved with her other friends. I have a feeling that Candi and K are going to soon alienate all their other friends, but only time will tell. 14 is a crappy age. It was crappy for Ducky (at least in the friend department), and it’s being semi-crappy for Squirt. :sigh:

    All in all it was a productive day. The kids had fun, the garage is cleaner and we made a couple hundred bucks. I got a little too much sun and too little fluids, but all in a good day. And now that the miscellaneous teens have all gone home, a good night as well!

    There are two kinds of people in the world: Those that garage sale and those that don’t – which are you?

    ****Edit*****

    What the heck??? Someone left me 1 star? Why don’t they just be open and honest and tell me, hey I think your blog sucks? Jeesh. I wish they told who left stars, at least if your commenting you know who said it.  Of course I allow anonymous commenting so that wouldn’t necessarily apply either. If I don’t like someone’s entry – I just leave and don’t return. I don’t bother to stop and insult them. Jeeze.

  • Glad your garage sale was a success!! YAY! Sorry about Squirt’s “friends”. Lame lame lame. It is such a tough age :(

    I’m a garage saler. I like to go to them more than I like to hold them, but we’ve done a few rather successfully. We anticipate doing a few (hopefully successfully) over the next couple months for sure as we prepare for the big move.

  • We do and we will once the stuff is here… too much stuff

  •  am definitely a garage saler…. I don’t like to have my own too much, but I LOVE shopping at other people’s. Mr. M & I also enjoy flea markets.

    And I agree that 14 is a crappy age… especially for girls. Thank goodness I’ve got a while before I have to go through that again.

  • My daughter went through a phase at 13-14 where she would make plans with one friend, and if a ‘better offer’ came along, she would ditch the first friend for the second one. When I caught on to that I was livid! I told her that was no way to treat her friends, and she’d end up losing them. She learned her lesson when she made plans for Halloween, and then tried to ditch them when someone invited her to a party. When I found out, her punishment was that she had to stay home with me on Halloween. Believe me, she screamed and cried about how harsh the punishment was, but to my knowledge, she never did it again. Sounds like Candi could use a little of that tough love herself. I’m glad Squirt had a good time without her.

  • i don’t. :big-smile:glad you had a decent day :)

  • I never have.  But, the way my garage is looking, I really need to consider it.  The problem is out location.  We’re kind of far off the beaten path.  I’ll have to team up with someone with a good location.

    ryc:  I wish Deanna would come back to Xanga.  What’s her Myspace name?  I’ve never been on myspace, is it any better or just more popular?

  • garage sales are a lot of work, how did it go??

    Too bad friends do that, at that age especially.
    :( Hard lesson to learn.

  • Hey there!!  I’m glad your garage sell was a success, too!!  Just stopping by super quick right now while I could.

    Thank you for all your kind words.  I sure do appreciate it!  I’m so sorry for what you have gone through also!

    Oh, yes, I do plan on going to the doctor soon if I don’t get any better.

    ((((HUGS)))

  • I am a garage sale girl.   I know all about the crap you get when feeling lonely.

  • I love going to them and hate having them myself.  So much work!

  • I love garage sales great way to spend a Sunday driving around finding them all. Yes I agree 14 is not an easy time, kids explore options and try to establish their own personality that can sometimes lead them to stray away from their close friends. Sometimes they return and sometimes not. Well all in all sounds like you had a good sale so thats super. Take good care now xoxo Tynee

  • I wish I was a garage sale girl. Could use the money sometimes. We mostly donate to Goodwill…unless it’s CD/DVD or books. Those get sold to anywhere that will by them…usually half price books. We would probably get more at a garage sale…but it works out okay. I LOVE going to garage sales though…especially in older neighborhoods…they usually have some pretty interesting stuff.

  • Hello,

    I saw you sneaking around my site, so I decided to stop in and say hi. I am glad I did… stop by again anytime…

  • i have put on my share of garage sales. i don’t like doing them but the money afterwards is good. i desided last time however that on the clothes items i would just take to goodwill because no one really bought any anyway.
    i remember 14. it was a hard year. so was 12 and 13. those were my hardest. for the same reasons you talk about here. friends not really being friends… moving is hard at that age too. lots of tears. hopefully it’s not a lasting thing.

  • I am so not a garage sale person.  I have worked them for the band but I have not had one myself in years.  I usually donate my stuff to the band and then we have a big one.  We paid for 26,000 bucks worth of uniforms that way!!!

  • We have a yardsale every year at the same time our town has its annual autumn canal festival, which happens to start practically at our door. You can’t beat that kind of advertising (Free). We usually make a couple hundred dollars.

  • roswell is someplace i would definitely like to visit one day. i could really get into the atmosphere of a place like that and delve into the delusion and maybe get lost in it

  • Oh, I love garage sales!  I am such a fiend.  I have found the most amazing things at garage sales with my kids.  It is one of our favorite hobbies!! I HATE having them.  Last time I had one… people stole so much stuff!   I feel for your teenager.  We are having a similar issue over here.  14 is a difficult age.

  • @harmony0stars -

    That is nice to have free advertising and not have to put up signs or anything! SWEET!

    @NightlyDreams -

    I actually lived for several years in Roswell…hubby says that explains alot – roflol – he thinks I may have actually been taken over by an alien! Haha!

    @heidicindy -

    It is indeed a tough age. Ugh. I hate this whole time frame, from about 12-15! I’ve never had anyone try to steal anything from one of my sales, but then mine are pretty small and easy to monitor.

  • @thefoursome -

    That’s amazing – 26,000?? WOW!

    @Rencherry -

    We do a lot of donating too — it’s so much simpler and I feel good about it!

    @TyneeGrannyB -

    It is a tough age. It was tough for my oldest, and it’s tough for the youngest. Ugh.

    @dtrask -

    I’ll have to look it up – I’ll message you with it!

    @prettynosyarentu -

    It went really well thanks!

  • @WakeUpLaughing -

    At least she had a mom who took the opportunity to teach their child a valuable life lesson!

    @madamzephyrus -

    We love flea markets as well! What fun huh?

    @AngRoCamp -

    Yeah, I try to get as rid of as much as I can before a move! I hear you!

  • I love to go gargae saling, but can’t seem to find much time to do it.  My husband will often stop at sales on his way home from work, but the stuff he finds would hardly merit treasure status in my opinion.  (tools, junk like that…)

    I was thinking you were putting such cute graphics with your post when I read about the star issue.  Is it possible that someone clicked at a bad time and hit it wrong?  My computer is always slow at responding to my clicks and sometimes takes me to links I never meant to go.  Your posts are just fine and hardly ‘crap-worthy’.  (although, I was pretty amused by your response to it-lol!)

  • ONE STAR?!

    ze cow will kill them.

    :dancingcow: :dancingcow: :dancingcow:

    muahahahahaha!

    HA!
