  • Shocking things and 3 Little Thankfuls

**For my Featured_Grownups entry please go HERE**

Another major change resulting from our move. OK, I understand the big ones, swapping ocean vistas with mountain views and high desert, leaving aloha spirit for high stress traffic, trading country life with city living. Not to mention the change in our grocery bills, electric bills, and fuel costs. When we got here the first thing we realized that boy...it was really dry here. My mouth was always dry, my lips were chapped and my skin felt so dry it was tight and itchy. Not to mention the change in my hair, but that was a good thing for the most part - I went from uncontrollable frizz and super curly to smooth and straight with occasional flyaway issues.

This latest adjustment is a little more shocking. Now that's it's cooled down we add that to the super dry air, throw in a little forced heat and you have an electrical situation - literally. I keep shocking the crap out of myself. It doesn't matter what I do, shoes, no shoes walking on concrete, tile or carpet - as soon as I touch anything metal, or another human being - KAPOW! I get shocked every time I open the door or the fridge. Every time I get in and out of my car. When I change the channel on the TV or answer the phone. This static electricity is no fun and I am now missing the dreadful hair frizzing humidity of Maui.

Alright, now that I've complained about the horridly dry and shocking conditions here is my contribution for the Kween's annual writing challenge:

    THREE LITTLE THANKFULS '07

Each year I ask you to list the three little things that you are thankful for.  NOT THE BIG THINGS. . . .NOT YOUR FAMILY, NOT YOUR CHILDREN, NOT YOUR CAR OR YOUR HOUSE, but the 3 small things that you never pay too much attention to, but when you think about it, you really wouldn't want to do without them!  For instance, because of a recent black out from storms in this area, I was reminded of how much I depend on electricity!  When it's out, why, what does one do but chores?  And those having nothing to do with electricity either!  Or a microwave oven that goes out. . . .can you live without one now?  But please don't think you have to stick with appliances. . .. some of you have withdrawals when you run out of hairspray (come on, some of you do!)

List the 3 little things you are most thankful for this year.....you have 1 (one) week!!!

    My three little thankfuls -

    1. Digital technology -- what would I do without my ipod, cds, dvr, computer, cell phone and digital camera?? My question is how on earth did I manage to eek out a miserable existence before these marvelous inventions?
    2. My bed. Ahhhhh….wonderfully soft and supportive, beckoning me each night into a dreamful sleep… I love my new mattress - can you tell?
    3. Caffeine. Nuff said.

Please stop by the Kween's site and read about other thankfuls -

  • Oh well done MiLady!  Personally, and because I've never lived anywhere but here, I would have to say that leaving a tropical paradise for the cramped quarters of the city would be quite an adjustment for me, especially since my fondest wish in the world is to visit your former location!  Sigh.

You've listed 3 great things here!  Bravo!  You've been starred and linked! ~Kween

  • I think I would have an adjustment period too with all those changes!  We, too, go through a static electricity period when everything you touch zaps you.  You need to get a humidifier.  You may need two.  I start to get sick in the winter from breathing all that dry air in all night long.  I;ll wake up with a sore throat and dry cough.  Then, I got a cool mist machine for my bedroom, so much better!

RYC:  That b*tch yesterday wrote back something nasty!  I may need you for the tires after all.  Do you have anyone in your world that needs an attitude adjustment?  Criss cross, plausible deniability!

  • oohhh i hate that static electricity!!!  we always get it here in the winter months, but i found a humidifier or even just boiling some water on the stove does wonders for that.  thanks for caring about me and thinking of me lately hon, it means alot to me.

  • I hate getting shocked!  I think it is from the days when my little brother would purposefully scuff his socks on the carpet and then reach out a finger to send a spark - YEOW!  I noticed I got a shock from the car for the first time this season just yesterday.  That's the worst offendor.  Even if I add a humidifier to the house (and I will have one running all winter), I can't seem to control the car.  My husband thinks it's funny - until HE gets shocked.  : )

  • You need a humidifier in the house to cut out some of the dryness. Lately I've been zapped in the grocery store pushing the cart around. There's a certain part of the cart that zaps me every time I touch it. Makes me crazy!

    Good thankfuls!

  • can't be happy anywhere can ya?? tsk tsk

I watched the movie "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" last night and I because sad that I don't have magical pants.
Do I even need to ask if that was weird?

  • Caffeine is definitely something none of us could be without.

  • I think it's that magnetic personality you have drawing all this electrical current!!!

    And caffeine -- yeah!

  • OMG when I moved back from Puerto Rico I had to go through the same adjustments. The only thing they didn't have was the "aloha spirit" I probably would have stayed if they did! I feel your pain...erm...literally!

Your three thankfuls are right on! Except for the bed one, I need a new one...comfy sleep oh how I miss thee!! I'm currently living with no internet at home and oy! I feel like I run to work just to get a dose....

  • I am SO with you on the thankfuls.

  • ohhh yeah i cant stand static either! good list too.

  • How bad is it that I was laughing OUT loud reading about your "shocking" situation.  I stayed in what we called the "Silver Palace" for a few weeks one summer when I was about 19 at Stone Mt. GA.  It was a bubble shaped silver trailer, talk about shocking! and I don't mean the little static shock, I mean OUCH.  You couldn't take a shower while standing IN the shower, or you'd get shocked.  You couldn't open the front door while standing on the patio, you had to lean over with a broom pray you could manuver it open.  You couldn't stand IN the kitchen while you washed dishes, it was insane then but pretty funny now.  :ROTFL::ROTFL:

  • Hehehe "shocking".

Great thankfuls! I'll have to remember to do my list sometime this week :)

  • Static electricity - got love it! Great thankfuls! I love the bed one - yes - why isn't that on my list??? peace

  • lol Love my java too Great list you have, thanks for sharing xoxo Tynee

  • those are all really good things to be thankful of. i'm going to go with indoor plumbing. my heated mattress pad. and blankets.

  • I'm right there with you on the technology and the bed.  We invested in a Sleep Number bed, and BOY!  I LOVE my bed now!  For three, I guess I'd have to go for indoor plumbing.  LOL!!!  Grandma had an outhouse when we were kids, and I would hate to have to run outside in the cold or in the middle of the night to use the toilet!

  • Hummm, not so very happy with my bed, but there you go. Now give me some chocolate with that caffine and your talking my language!

  • very nice!!! Caffeine for sure!

  • great little thankfuls...and if'n you were to say prop a broom up against your car at nite and grab the handle while opening the door in the am it works...I grew up in static dry air...water coolers and pots of water on the stove...Smile

  • RYC:  I'm sending the jet for you right now love!  I'm sure we can get you here before time for drinks!!!
