To Sleep perchance to dream…
First let me thank everyone who offered advice, sympathy, empathy and those who volunteered to help me take her out if need be. Your comments were a tremendous help to my emotional distress. So far their have been no repercussion and instead some positive improvements. I’m sure they will be more to come on this, but for now the dust is settling.
Now on to other less traumatic things.
I went to bed at 9:00 pm last night. This is almost unheard of for me, but I was tired and the bed was calling my name. It was dark, as we had just had a major thunderstorm, in fact it was still raining. Some of my favorite sleeping times is while it’s raining. The girls went out and played in the rain, lots of fun was had by all. And then I headed for bed.I love our bed. It’s wonderfully soft yet supportive. This hasn’t always been the case. But since we moved into this house, and we bought the new mattress it has.
We didn’t intend to buy a new mattress. We intended to “make do” with our old bed for one more year, and when we bought our own house, buy a new bed for it. But a funny thing happened on moving day. See our old bed was a waterbed that hubby had when he was single. That’s right over 21 years old. Until the move we still had the original full wave mattress, liner and heater as well. Only in HI the cats put a hole in the bed, and the heater crapped out. We patched the hole but decided when we got here we would get a new bag and heater, and then in a year or so replace the whole bed. It’s one of those pine one with the mirror / book case headboard and the drawers underneath. Something right out of an 80s movie. Pathetic I know, but hey it worked and for a long time we absolutely loved our waterbed and hated to sleep on anything else.
The last three years though, I’ve been waking up with a sore back. I’ve enjoyed the times when we traveled and slept on a “real” bed, so we started talking about replacing it – eventually.
Well, eventually caught up with us. Our bedroom is on the top floor ( tri-level) house. It is also above the garage. We set up the water bed, with the new bag and heater. As we started to fill it we started getting concerned. First I asked if our lease had listed no waterbeds. Nope that was clear. Then I wondered if there would be a problem on the top floor. Hubby commented that we’d had it upstairs many places and he didn’t think there would be a problem. Reassured I left to continue unpacking the endless supply of kitchen boxes.
Half and hour later I came in to find him crouched across from the bed with a worried expression.
Since hubby is a calm, easygoing guy, his worried expression worried me. “What?” I demanded. “Look at the bed, tell me which corner looks the lowest to you”. That was easy, the one in the center of the room was clearly lower. Well, turns out hubby had gotten concerned about the lack of support beams in the garage (under our room). He had gone to double check and yep, no support beams in the middle of the garage, just the walls. Our bed was filled with water right smack over the center of the garage. We debated about 5 minutes and decided we better drain the bed. Hubby propped up a temporary support using his hydraulic stand. We nervously drained the bed, hoping against hope that the floor would not collapse before we got enough weight off of it.
That night we slept on an air mattress in the living room. Correction: we started out on an air mattress, sometime during the night, our little kitty of death, Merry, popped a hole in it and we were sleeping on the ground. I ended up on the couch and hubby on a recliner. The next day we went out and bought a mattress. We still have the same crappy 21+ year old bed, but a beautiful, ohhh soo comfortable pillow top mattress inside it. Now the only thing I need is sheets that actually fit it ~ waterbed sheets just aren’t cutting it!
No more sore backs, no more sloshing, no more heater (ok that one I may miss this winter), and no more filling and draining. I love my new bed!
Question of the day:Favorite place and time to sleep, perchance to dream…..

Thanks for the comment…………….lots of hugs………:wink-wink:
RYC: The flowers are Lantana. They are tropical for our area, but I do love them so buy them almost every year.
We still have our waterbed! It is a tube one; no heater. We have had two leaks in the whole time we’ve had it, so we just bought a new tube. I worry about our floor sometimes – we’re on the upper floor of a bilevel!
We need a new mattress really badly too. It’s too soft and lumpy. Some nights I end up on the floor because it is actually more comfortable! To answer your question, I love to take a nap during a thunderstorm in the afternoon. There’s nothing better than being all cozy in bed when it’s thundering and lightning, especially when you know you should be doing something else!
HAHAHAHA My fiance’s bachelor bed was a water bed before I met him…lucky him it popped and he had to get a different one. My favorite place to sleep is in our crappy little bed, my corner, yes I mean corner is perfect for me…right after work before he comes home. I never stay asleep at night so whatever nap I can get in before he comes up or comes home is great, those are few and far between.
RYC: Any time hun! :big-smile:
RYC: 8 is totally unheard of for me. I am doing good if I can get to bed by 10:30. I like to do my crossword puzzles and the time just flies. I hope you got some much needed sleep. I swear I might go to bed early again tonight. Nothing on TV til NCIS comes back.
I like to take a nap on the couch when it is just drizzling and I can hear it hitting the fireplace.
I just plain like to sleep, and I love my bed! I have a king-sized bed from Ikea, with a very firm mattress, also from Ikea…no springs, on wooden slats, with a think foam topper on it. VERY comfy, and I can sleep there anytime!
We had a waterbed for years, until we moved in here and bought a platform bed. Love the bed, hate the mattress. Waterbed was great in the summer, but our heater was broken, so I had to use layers of comforters under the sheets to keep us warm in winter. I loved the wave movement, though. Used to ‘rock’ myself to sleep. It was a tall bed and I remember it was real difficult getting out of bed when I was pregnant…
we had a waterbed just like that until a few years ago…three to be exact….but it sure is nice to sleep on a regular bed isn’t it? the cats popped ours too
lol
my favorite time and place to sleep is an afternoon nap snuggling with my kitty on the bed
