First Day of School
Both girls had relatively good days. Both think their classes were going to be OK, and for the most part felt good about their teachers.
Ducky has two that she says are going to drive her crazy. One is her AP English class — he has a Doctorate. He made it painstakingly clear he was a “Dr.”. On top of that he’s one of those annoying professors that has to prove how smart he is by making the class impossible. He boasted how rarely anyone received an A in his class and how many students would be dropping out of it. Boy that’s something to be proud of huh? To me it says he’s a lousy teacher if the majority of the students can’t pass and / or drop out. Her other pain will be in Alg II — where the teacher treat them like babies, but claims she will treat them as young adults. She opened up by asking in a baby voice if the students knew and understood that they would be required to take Math in college. *rolls eyes*. You would think that an Alg II teacher would have some grasp of her student body. These are juniors. By now most of these kids have looked at colleges, and are prepping to get in. They are not third graders who concept of college consists of what they see on TV.
Good luck to her with that. She had homework in 4 classes tonight. Could be a tough year. She’s totally stoked about her creative writing class and her philosophy class though — which is good as those are her electives this year!
We have homework tonight too — stacks and stacks of papers to sign, read and memorize. Oh wait, not memorize. On top of that we had to stop off for some additional school supplies. Neither girl had a list this year, so we just got a few basics. We needed some more. Ducky needs a 1″ binder for just about every class. Squirt needed an additional expanding portfolio for one of her classes (they each have one to keep their papers organized, much better than folders) as well as some index cards, more composition books and 2 binders with dividers. The amount of stuff they require for school these days is ridiculous. When I went to high school you needed: Pens, pencils, paper (could be notebook filler paper or spiral didn’t matter) and we usually wanted folders, but you didn’t even NEED them. I NEVER carried a backpack until I went to college. I just didn’t need it. Some of those little kids today had so much crap they required adult assistance to go to school.
In the good news department:
A friend who I used as a reference (she was also a boss) contacted me to let me know the school district was checking my references. Yahoo — maybe I’ll get a job (subbing, ugh) soon.
and…
Hubby is going back to Maui to work the AMOS conference. In addition he is getting on with this company as an on-call employee and they are trying to find a full time position for him with one of their contractors. Woot! Income — I luvs me some money! LOL
It sure was quiet today with the girls gone, but the day flew by. Tomorrow Squirt has her physical, Hubby has to go sign his job offer, and then we will work out again (we are back at the gym EVERYDAY). I love working out everyday. It makes me feel so much better about myself, even if I still haven’t lost any weight.
Here’s some funnies about back to school ~ Enjoy!
Question of the Day:
Did you have a backpack when you went to school?

Glad the girls had a good day. :big-smile: I didn’t have a backpack, it was more like a book “bag” humm? kind of hard to explain but no, not a “backpack” like the one the kids carry today.
No backpack… not cool! I carried all my books and only 1 binder!
It’s good to get back to the routine, but I’m sad to see summer end!
gosh the kids have so much to carry around these days! i can’t believe how some of the teachers give tons of homework and some give barely anything!
have a great day sweetie!!!!
Glad your girls are getting settled in. Those teachers sound “wonderful”.
I never had a backpack. I think in college I had a L.L.Bean canvas bag that I used to carry my books around.
The mom of a friend of my son’s is a college professor and one time she was talking about how one of her boys were in her class. I was joking and asked her if he got to call her mom or did he have to call her Mrs. F in her class. She got really snippy and said that no one calls her Mrs., she is referred to as Dr F. Whatever. That teacher sounds like a jerk. Anyone who has to make sure that everyone knows they are Dr. always make me think they have self image issues. I agree with you that if he were a good teacher he wouldn’t go out of his way to make it tough, he would want the kids to learn it and enjoy the class. Kids dropping out and no one getting an A is not the mark of a good teacher, it’s the mark of a teacher who has power issues.
Good luck with the job! And nope, no backpack. I carried a stack of books and papers everywhere I went. It’s sad now, really… kids have lost that lovely “dropping the books accidentally” ploy to get cuties to help pick them up.

A backpack?! No way! Nobody carried a backpack. Although some of the popular girls could persuade their boyfriends to carry their books. There were a lot of books to carry but we never needed anything specific in the way of school supplies. It seemed like every year our Daughter would come home with some requirement that was impossible to find, since supplies would be cleaned out after school started.
Wishing Ducky good luck with the inpossible teacher. Of course, it could be that that is just his way of trying to weed out the students who aren’t committed. Or he could be like an honors biology teacher I had who was impossibel. His tests were (in)famous for not having much, if any, information covered in the textbook OR in class. He graded on a scale, but it was still horrid. I felt like I walked the plank every time I had a quiz or test in his classroom, and I did not learn anything in that class.
Andrew went back today. Hopefully the day goes well and his teachers are all good. He has the same teacher last year for Alg 2 that he had for Geo. The school asked the teacher if he would move up with some of his students and he called us on Monday to say he had switched Andrew to his class. Awesome. The other teachers we don’t know much about. Just what other friends kids have said. You don’t really have that luxury though. He then has Cross country til 5 so this is going to be a long day for him. Then homework after that. Yikes. I just hope the work he turned in today from the summer assignments are to the teachers liking. I hope her teachers get better. The alg 2 teacher will give the class a test to see who actually belongs in that class and who should move on but I don’t think he would act like a child or treat them like a child. Poor Ducky
I didn’t have a backpack in school. We all used lockers or we just didn’t study. LOL. No actually I lived right up the street from the middle school so I could go home at lunch and get what I needed. High school I just left everything in the car once I could drive.
School ALREADY? Dang…
I totally agree about the teachers. Anyone who insists on being called DR…well, you know what Ph.D. stands for don’t you…….Piled Higher and Deeper! I’ve been working with them for 26 years and the smart ones don’t have to make a big deal of it, you just know.
Funny you mention AMOS, the AF Information Technology conference was on our campus this week. Poor guys had to suffer through 100+ degree heat, not a pretty sight.
I homeschool so a backpack for mine is out of the question. However the oldest when he goes to college has to carry a load so heavy that it practically needs a forklift. Back brace needed and new back.
Glad you liked the post. Let me know how it turns out.
