  • Poor Ducky

*Edit* For my Kween_of_the_Queens post, please see here.

Ducky got her schedule for school today. Boy will she be busy this year! She has:

Creative Writing (she took this as one of her electives)

    Honors English

    AP History and Geography

    Analytical Chemistry

    Algebra II

    Philosophy (her other elective)

To top all that off, she found out she has 4 days to read the Grapes of Wrath and complete 6 handwritten pages of Summaries, plot evaluations etc and 4 hand written pages of bullet form notes on characters, setting etc. A fun way to end her summer vacation huh?

In addition she want to take a SAT prep course, get a job and re-qualify for Gifted services. Why you may ask? Since she’s already in all advanced classes? We mostly so she participate in the AP Gifted Mentorship program. It for Seniors and will pair her up with a profession of her choice to shadow for the year. When I told her about that she was determined to get in. To work with a journalist for a year is a big carrot.

Quite a helping she served herself. Hope she has room on her plate!

Squirt had one day to prepare for testing into Alg I and Honors English. They wouldn’t accept her test scores / grades / or classes from last year as prerequisites. For some reason she didn’t get in. So she’s got a cruise year with Pre-Algebra, English, Literature, Science, Musical Theater and Art. She should have some fun in some of those classes. She was however extremely disappointed to find out they didn’t allow any unnatural hair colors in her school, so no purple hair for her. We’ll find out the fate of Ducky’s hair on Monday when we go back for her ID and books.

When I was in High School, we had very few students who took such strenuous academic schedules. The only people who had that kind of schedule are the kids with plaid short sleeve button shirts with pocket protector, high water cords or khaki pants, and participated in activities like Chess club and Latin. Although I graduated a year early from High School, my schedule was full of the basic required courses. Electives were Band, Dance or Gymnastics (once I met my PE requirement). Oh yeah and Art.  Course Ducky tried to get into Ceramics or Photography instead of Philosophy but they were full. She also tried to get into A History of Rock and Roll or AP European History, or a Shakespeare class but they were all canceled due to lack of interest.  What kind of a high school doesn’t have enough kids sign up for a Rock and Roll History class?? I would have been all over that! Ducky said she’s worried about the school now, thinks there must be full of retards – all her Maui friends would have rushed to register for that! We’ll see.

Question of the day: (another twofer)

What were your electives in High School?

    and / or

Would you take a Rock and Roll History class?

  • That sounds like a hellish schedule.  Gotta admire the kid for her ambition!  Sounds like you’re raising some bright ones!

I took speech and computers as electives.  I definitely would have taken the rock and roll course.  Btw, I only took speech because I wanted to be a lawyer back then.  I have a terrible poker face though!

  • AP History and Geography

    Analytical Chemistry

    Algebra II

    YIKES :hammer:

  • Wow! Sounds like a tough year but I’m sure she’ll do great.  I took “gym 2″ one year as an “easy” elective thinking “cool gym, easy A”  turns out gym 2 was “weight lifting” :hammer:  But then again the class was full of good looking guys so….  :wink-wink:

  • Wow! I hope she has a good year! :big-smile:

  • I took art classes, but our schedules were so full of required stuff that there was very little room left for electives.  In my day, I think the “history” class would have been very easy because it would be SHORT!  : D

  • I didn’t take general courses in school, I was in the special classes…we had to interview and everything.  I was in book keeping/clerical so we didn’t have electives. Not that there were many choices regardless…Schools in Puerto Rico at the time really sucked. I can relate with the culture shock your may or may not be experiencing…

Rock and Roll history??? SIGN ME UP! :so-cool:

  • I should give Andrew her myspace so they can talk about AP history, Chem, Alg 2 and English.  He had to read two books and do a summary on one of them.  The Girl with a Pearl Earring and the Alchemist.  He also has a History packet that is due the first day and they have a test that day too.

RYC:  I know he will find girls soon.  He just is pretty shy still.  That will change I am sure.  :) :) :) .  Have a great weekend

  • Wow great post and yep I would take a rock and roll history class.

I dont like the skinks in the house.  They sort of remind me of having

mice and those suckers are faster than a speeding bullet.

I have caught them with a lego lid before.

  • Bless her heart, she will be busy! Good Luck!

I think my electives in High School were things like Spanish, chemistry, physics and Algebra III. I had enough credits to graduate at the end of my junior year, but lacked the required senior government class. One summer I took American History in summer school so that I could take Spanish during the regular term. I had the highest scores in the summer, as well as compared to the regular class but because I went to summer school, I couldn’t be considered for the American History Award. Makes lots of sense to punish students because they want to take MORE….

Oh heck yes would I take a history of rock and roll class! That would be awesome! That sounds more like the kind of thing I see at the college level. You get these people who have their pet areas and once they are tenured and want some fun, you start seeing special topic classes like “horror and suspense”, “science fiction and fantasy” in the literature departments. Makes for much more fun for students for sure.

  • HEY!!! Howcome sunnycaligirl’s son got to read GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING for his english class? I have to read stupid boring GRAPES OF WRATH. the Alchemest is a good book too. >.< I GOT JIPPED!! :steamed:

  • my daughter is so upset…she is in all honors classes.

    i hope u have a great weekend!

  • I did marching band (for a while) and journalism.  Loved journalism.  And I probably wouldn’t have taken the Rock & Roll class at the time, but I would now.  LOL

    Trish

  • I enjoyed this post-I agree, you have very intelligent children don”t you?  What a load of classes!

I have to laugh, time will tell what her fellow students are like, but I’m fairly certain they aren’t all retards.  I would have LOVED a “history of rock and roll’ class and would be all over that still today!

My electives were art classes and creative writing classes.  I took journalism as well (those kids put together the yearbook) and I learned a TON in that class.  I still remember how gruelling it was to write in columns…

When does school start for her?

  • :frog:  Well, I just dunno, myself.  I had 15+ shock treatments by mistake in the summer after graduation from High School, at 18, and I can’t remember names of old friends nor how to do math. My mother thought I could be shown to be a good example of a good failure. I guess…that I am. (That darn Nazi!)
