Black Saturday??
So yesterday was spent working on the remainder of my assignments for this week — so much fun. Hubby went golfing. The girls mostly hung out at home and watched movies. Squirt went to the pool for awhile. Otherwise it was just us and the leftovers.
We had a great Thanksgiving. Working at Hale Kau kau was amazing. There were lots of volunteers and we served about 100 or so homeless or down on their luck people and families. Some just broke your heart. One family had a little girl about 5 and a baby. But you know what? They were in such good spirits. The Hale kau kau really did it right too. First we set up the tables with white linen table cloths and real silverware, not plastic. Each table sat 6, and placed on each table was 6 oranges, 6 apples and 6 bags of chocolate covered almonds. There were tables for salad, rolls, fruit, drinks and pies. Each table was assigned a volunteer, and when people sat down they served salad, drinks, rolls and fruit. Then when they ready, their plates were cleared and volunteers got their plates of turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy and corn. The whole day they were waited on hand and foot. There was a musician playing local tunes and a church hula group performed for us. It was great. A fabulous way to spend the day.
We came home and made our dinner; Turkey breast, spiral ham, stuffing, potatoes, dressing, cranberry sauce, corn, deviled eggs, apple cake and pumpkin pie (which Squirt made Wednesday in Home Ec). It was a fantastic day. Made all the richer by our experience at Hale Kau Kau. Now we don’t have to cook for the rest of the weekend — as we have TONS of leftovers.
Now normally I avoid Black Friday. As you can probably tell, I’m not much for crowds. Actually I’m anti-crowd. However, my oldest heard about some amazing sales on clothes and wants to go check them out. So today I will be braving the crowds, instead of going snorkeling or hiking, which was the original plan. Sigh. Oh woe is me. Oh well. Chin up right? Hopefully we won’t waste the entire day doing this, and can still have some fun… and no.. I don’t think of shopping after Thanksgiving as fun.
Shop or find other activities?

Definitely other activities, no snorkeling here though. I hate crowds too, more so the older I get. I shop really well under pressure. I was famous for hitting the mall 2-3 days before Christmas and doing it all at once. With kids it’s harder to do that, but I still like it. I find if you shop too early you just end up spending more money because you’re never really done.
What a great way to spend Thanksgiving! It sounds like a very considerate way to treat people, not just feed them, but make them feel special too and not looked down upon. The organizers must have done a very good job, and I’m sure you guys did as well.
No shopping, and not much of anything else either! Lazing around…..mmmmmm!
I have to shop because the daughter needs clothes for her Israel trip.
What a great way to spent Thanksgiving helping other in need
Sound like you had a great dinner when you got home.
I am making some of the gifts this year. So that helps.
Internet shopping, baby!
Trish
YUM! Your leftovers sound much better than mine! LOL
RYC: Yes, my baby is 6’4″. I love that because my ex always picked on him that he was going to be short because I am only 5’4″. Guess he showed him!
Happy Sunday!
Thats great that you went out to the community to help!! Evrey year I usually volunteer a shift on the local ambulance to give the crew a day off on the holiday. This year I choose to spend with my family. What a great day it was!!
what a wonderful way to spend thanksgiving…helping others then spending time with the family at home
i didn’t go out on black friday…i hate shopping anyway.
that is great that you guys did that for the homeless that is just great more people should do that and it sounds wondeful for them. Have a great day and hope ya had a good time shopping.
That is the coolest thing ever to do with your family. To go and help other famlies. I like how they did it too. I did not go shopping on black friday. I did go on saturday night. There were not many people out at all. I like that movie step up, it was good. Hey how do you make apple cake?
What a great Thanksgiving! Our homeless shelter serves three meals a day, 365 days a year, and the only time they don’t need volunteers is Thanksgiving week. It seems many of our local “haves” only think of others one week a year. We usually serve several times a year. It helps the big kids appreciate all that they have and curbs the gimme’s.
I wasn’t going to go shopping, either, but Saturday had to hit the mall to buy gifts for the out-of-town nieces who were visiting. Aeropostale had everything in the store 50% off. That was a sale worth braving the crowds for.
Sounds like you had a great day. Always feels good to help others. I would have gone on Friday but the stupid phone sale. Oh well. We did end up going later. Not much out there that we needed. Andrew hates shopping for clothes.
i dont really feel like commenting.

there ya go.
Oh man, I hope you went snorkeling instead!….I have not gone shopping on Black Friday for over 10 years….I just refuse to do that to myself, my motto is “I’d rather pay more for it”…life is much too short to witness nasty people pushing and shoving each other in an attempt to get “a bargain”….YIKES!
I’m glad to hear you had a nice Thanksgiving. I can’t imagaine getting to snorkel at this time of year-you are going to miss Ha. when your hubby retires.
ryc: Thank you for the birthday wishes and yes, all the blocks in the quilt have ameanings. I am a little surprised at you! The bottom row of blocks included a few Hawaiian applique blocks and I guesss I just assumed you would have been drawn to them, or would have found them familiar. Like you, I love the top row too.
I avoid black friday too……..sorry I was away, now I am back hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving……love and peace to you.:sunny:
