So yesterday Squirt started her gymnastics classes. I love gymnastics. I participated through my sophomore year in high school and have been a fairly avid fan since then. Although I must admit I don’t follow it very closely anymore…too much to keep up with in my own life! Anyways, back to squirt; so now she has gymnastics class 2x a week in town (about 20 minutes away), horseback riding (upcountry about 20 minutes) and science class in Kihei on Fridays (about 30-40 minutes depending on traffic). On top of that she’s still going to need additional PE activities as she needs 60 hours for 1/2 a credit and 120 hours for 1credit. Jeesh. So we are looking into golf lessons — 1-2x week.
And they talk about homeschool kids needing socialization……?? Give me a break!
Never the less… It’s good for her and gives me a few quiet moments to myself, to run errands, have coffee with friends or just read uninterrupted for more than 15 minutes.
I’m thinking of joining the YMCA in town so I can work out while she is in gymnastics. I can then also attend the water aerobics classes they hold at the local pool just 10 minutes away. I decided yesterday that working out at home just isn’t cutting it. It never fails, I start to work out and just when I’m really starting to work up a good sweat the phone rings. I ignore it, because 1) I’m in the middle of something… hello! and 2) who wants to talk on the phone when they are panting and sweating all over the receiver…yuck. Besides, I can always imagine what the person on the other end is thinking… “why is she panting? What has she been doing all morning”….so the phone is ringing and squirt being the dutiful daughter rushes to answer it (on the 6th ring or something like that). She speaks briefly to the person on the other end and then I hear “oh yeah, she’s right here, hold on” and the phone is stuck in my face. AAARRRGGGHH.
After that brief interruption I try to get started again… just a few minutes into my new start, Squirt comes back in. She’s decided to do a load of towels. Why? I have no idea, she’s usually not that motivated. I yell “Wash dad’s white shirt with that stuff”. She comes back and states (hands on hips), “well I’d love to do that, but I can’t find it so I guess I can’t” (Where on earth does this child get her attitude — I, personally, am at a total loss). I tell her it’s already in the washer. Then the questions start. What size should I select, what water temperature, what wash setting — the questions come at me in a barrage. Now… this is the girl who knows how to do EVERYTHING. (she’s 12 and really good at it — being 12 I mean). And let’s face it, she has changed the oil and brakes on my car, helped her dad build an engine, built a model engine on her own and taught herself how to cook, the girl has skills.
Finally in frustration I go and do it myself. After the 3rd interruption, I have no desire to work out. I’m done for the day. I’m pissed because all I wanted was 40 minutes to work out. I even got up early so I could work out before she was up and around and after everyone else had left. But that is ruined for the day. I come to the conclusion that working out at home has never worked for me. It’s always something:
the dog,
the phone,
the kids,
the husband,
the door,
yadda yadda yadda….
So, from now on it’s an outside the house work out. I’d go for a walk, but I’d rather drill a hole in my head — I hate walking. It’s SO BOOORRRINNNNGGG. I’d love to be able to go for a run, but I’m not in good enough shape for that. So… options are
The Y, and water aerobics, or…
drill a hole in my head and walk it off.
So… Question for the Day:
Do you work out? And if so… where?

I try to work out every day and succeed most days.
I work out at home on a couple of machines and I love to walk. With three dogs, walking is a necessity. (And since they’re pit bulls, it’s also security.)
I work out 4-5 times a week at the park district gym. It’s $19/month, maybe 2 other people in the entire place while I’m there, and it takes care of the basics for me. It’s a good 1.5 mile run there for a great warmup. Throw that in with the 2+ miles I walk everyday to and from work and I’m not doing too shabby during the warmer time of the year.
How old are your children ( I know I should know this, please forgive me) Have you always homeschooled? Just curious. I got Trey a cute shirt from the homeschool roundup, it has a yellow caution sign and says “Caution Un-Socialized Homeschooler” too cute!
That is a busy schedule, I’m not familiar with Charter Schools, how’s that work? Trey has homeschool bowling (which we count as PE) on Monday’s, Park day (more PE) on Wednesdays, and Chess Club on Thursdays. We reserve Fridays as field trip days and according to what kind of mood I”m in we usually do those alone without the group. Anyway I’m going on and on, guess I should go to my own blog.
Have a good night.
OMG. The exact thing happens to me. That is why I pay for the gym so I stay motivated. Don’t want to waste the money(not sure what happened to the last month and a half) I did finally go back today though. Andrew is the same way. He doesn’t want to do ANY chores until I am in the middle of something and then the questions. I finally end up doing it myself. GRRRRR. Kids, gotta love em.
after mowing lawns all day i don’t work out at all
I used to have the same problem working out at home – but as a single mom (at the time) with a three-year-old (when I decided to get back in shape) – I couldn’t afford either the money or the time for the gym. I have been working out at home three mornings a week for the past three years, and eventually KB got used to the fact that she can’t bug me in the morning. She knows that my workout time is my time. Takes a little bit of time for the family to get used to that, though.
I have a membership at curves, but i dont’ really like the workout there. It doesn’t get my heart pumping AT ALL. I’m not out of breath when I leave & I feel like I haven’t doen anything. I used to work out at a different place & LOVED it, but I couldn’t afford the membership this year. So maybe next year! Those are ALL the reasons why I don’t work out at home either!
i homeschooled my 23 year old from the 6th grade up and to be quite honest, he was smarter than most of the kids older than him that went to a regular school. i totally believe in homeschooling. my niece homeschools her kids too.
In oct. I plan on joining a gym too. I can’t work out at home either and like you I hate walking, we have no sidewalks in most of our streets and I hate walking in the street at anytime.
My grandson in in his second year of home schooling, so far he is doing real well in it.
Have a nice day
I try to work out but come up short for many of the same reasons you mention. The pressures and time constraints on a mom with life are much-and if you homeschool your time is even more hard pressed. Summertime is a great time to ‘do things’ with the kids like swimming, water skiing, walking etc. I don’t have problems keeping active in the summer. In the remaining seasons, I also homeschool 5 and this gets difficult. Nearby is a park and we try to go there and walk, use the skateboard well, or the playground. I like walking.
Thank you for your comments-I would have liked your father in that lab waiting room. He might have stilled a few tongues…and gotten me to laugh out loud.
I don’t exercise.
Exercise is evil. Well, okay, so maybe not evil, but painful. And if one more person suggests that I take up walking, I WILL drill a hole – in THEIR head, so they can be as miserable as I am when I walk!
We have had a Y membership for several years, but since it is a 20 minute drive there, we’ve decided to drop it. We waste too much gas and time when we go. And I can’t work out at home, because I have children. So I wallow in my fat, and that’s that.
