What’s that I smell?
edit***********edit************edit********
For those of you who read Wednesdays entry, I got another call from another consolidating company today!!!!! AAARRRGGHHHH. Again, I was not nice…. I said “I am SO not interested, and I’m about to walk out the door (which was true I was standing there with keys and purse in hand) so I don’t have time to argue you with you about it. Have a nice day….. CLICK.
Doing the do not call thing TONIGHT. We have caller ID, but the girls answer and then say, “oh yeah, she’s right here, hold on a minute”. AARGH!!!
Now back to the regularly scheduled update………
One of my comments about vacations yesterday got me to thinking. LittleLo_63 commented that she loved Hawaii because of the smell. I know exactly what she means. My nose is very sensitive. I often smell things others don’t. During my studies I have also found that the strongest connection to memory is…….. you guessed it! The sense of smell. Now this of course can be good… or as anyone who has changed a diaper knows, VERY BAD! I was thinking about my favorite smells. I have a couple that I love.
The smell of hot dirt that’s just been rained on (Arizona girl), the smell of damp cold dirt – That’s the way my grandma’s house and dirt cellar smelled all the time, and the smell of fall. That’s why it’s my favorite season. Germany in the fall has a great smell. It’s hard to describe, but I remember coming back from a trip to the states, getting off the plan and walking down the airport gateways and just breathing it in. To this day when it gets the crisp feeling in the air, and a certain smell comes along, I picture our first day in Germany. Walking hand in hand down cobblestone streets drinking in the sights, sounds and yes, the smells.
Now, the bad side of smells — I love candles and I have a friend in AZ who is just as addicted to them as I am. We were constantly on the look out for just the perfect candle, so we frequently went candle “sniffing” together, often so long that we both developed headaches. When we first started this she would torture me. Intentionally. It went something like this:
D: (picks up candle and smells it) Ewwww, that’s horrible, here you try it
Me: (uh duh) ok……………….. YUCK, that’s horrible!
D: (laughing) I told you it was bad.
The really sad part was she frequently caught me. I’m not a stupid person (most of the time) so why continually smell junk she has told me stinks??? If someone said you want to smell this garbage, it’s really gross. I would naturally say No thank you, and don’t you think you should take your meds now? But she would say ewww or something derogatory, hand it to me and I would stick my nose right in it! What is that??? Blind obedience??? Crazy. Why is it when someone hands us something that would normally be a pleasure (food, scents etc), tells us it’s bad, we have to try it for ourselves? Is it because taste and smell are subjective and not everyone likes the same flavors and scents? Needless to say I did finally learn that I could take her word for it. Now when I’m out shopping with my dd’s I smell a candle and say ewww… I don’t like this one, then promptly hand it to them. They too follow their mother’s example in blind obedience and sniff away…… muahhahahhaha!!!
So what about it? Any smells connected to memories or just favorite smells? Come on don’t be shy, I won’t laugh……………much!

Hmmm….favorite smells…cut grass, woods (as in walking in the deep), rain, first spring, first fall, first winter…all different smells, sunscreen (which always makes me think of summer), baby smell…maybe not the diaper part, though, clean kids, my kids, hot and sweaty from hard play-oldest does not yet have the stink of puberty yet, so still smells kiddish, my man after not seeing him for awhile, his cologne, hmmm…I’m sure there’s lots others…
I love the smell of campfires, my kids hair after it’s been washed, summer night rain and blackcherry koolaid. Also Bread Factorys cause they remind me of my dad. I know, I’m strange but I used to work there too and it was cool to smell like a loaf!! hahahha
I went to Germany to with my hubby in Janurary 1990, it was about 40 degrees durning the day it was nice. I have candles all over my house. My friend likes the Yankee candles.
yea.. I don’t get when people go.. “eww this tastes bad.. taste it!”
um.. ok! NOT! LOL.. great post..
RYC: come over to angies site some time (thefoursome) we love potter talk.
I have wandered over here from QueenSuchandSuch’s abode and found a really great poster…or is that postee? I know what you mean about the smell of Germany…it is wonderful! Lets see..I love the smell of baking bread or cookies, and I love the smell of vanilla..all of this reminds me of my mother’s kitchen.
tweaker……………………………..
I got here by way of QueenSuchandSuch…just watched Just Like Heaven…
Smells…first of all Germany always smells good…so crisp and clean…
My smell…the smell of someones fireplace (while outside) always reminds me of my first love. We would go to these bonfires at night in the summer time. He was the person that made me realize what all the fuss was about.:heartbeat:
Just out of curiosity, is your friend in Arizona named Dee? I know it’s a big state but my sister Dee (Dani) lives there and she makes candles for fun. That would be so strange if you knew her. Anyway…
Hi! I’m up extra early today, (son is sick) so I decided to have a cup of coffee and go visit all of my xanga friends. Moth Balls….Yes, Moth Balls! Everytime I smell those horrible things, it reminds me of my Great Grandma. Her house smelled like one giant moth ball!…blah!..My favorite is bacon, vanilla and roses!…lol…to bad they don’t make candles that smell like bacon, Chris and I would buy them!..giggles
Wendy
I really like the smell of blowtorches….
Tell oldest DD that I am just a consultant. I don’t have the authority to make any executive decisons!
Smells: I love lavender and vanilla. I just realized recently that the shampoo or soap my mom used when I was very little must have been one or the other, because when I use my lavender vanilla shampoo, I am always 3 or 4 years old again, in the bathtub at the house we lived in until I was in kindergarten. Certain food smells also can transport me back in time, usually to my grandma’s house. The only downside to being so aware of smells is that it went hand-in-hand with morning sickness when I was pg. No fun.
I had D sign us up for the no call thing the other day. I snatched it right off your site! LOL
I love the smell of the beach and love smell of sun tan oil too and of course a new born baby smell is so good. Or fresh morning smell is nice too. Hope ya have a great day today take care, tracy
this is an interesting topic. I was thinking about this very same thing the other day The smell of red door perfume conjures images of my mother. She is alive just not near me.
The smell of the leaves in the fall and the crisp cool air and the sound of leaves crunching beneath your feet is one of my favorites. Fall is my favorite season. The smell of baby hair *think baby magic shampoo* take me back to when my babies were small.
There are smells that certainly do conjure up memories like the smell of the boardwalk in the summertime, that brings back all of the fun times that we have had or the smell of someone starting up a lawnmower but that also brings back memories of going to the go-kart track. there are more but thats all that I can think of right now
I hate when they call and bug you in your home and your busy.
RYC. Usually on Survivor it seems like the ones that are the most obnoxious tend to stay, why is that. Yes Shane needs to go.
*haha* Yeah, I never understood the whole smelling battle. Another one is something old that just came outta the fridge. “Here, stick your nose on this disgustingly molded curdled mass and see if it smells like rotting flesh to you too…”
