Internet travels
Featured_Grownups asks:
In your own words, tell us how the internet has changed your life… start and end where ever you choose. It can be silly, sad, serious, dramatic. Make it a mystery or story, poem or song… or just tell us; it’s your writing, it’s up to you.

The miracle of Internet -
In the beginning— no wait scratch that.We got our first computer back in the early 90s. Ducky was just a toddler and loved to stand up at the huge keyboard with its black and green screen attached and pretend to be typing away. This was a Zenith 100 — DOS based computer. Really, just a fancy typewriter, although it played some games and those with skills could get other things from it (that unfortunately did NOT include me). I used this to write my college papers on, but still counted on the library for research materials.
In the mid 90s we made our first real computer. Yep. That’s right I said made. Hubby is in computer maintenance by trade – and he discovered if you assemble your own they were much cheaper – so he Frankensteined our first machine. Actually it was a pretty darn good little machine, and my folks still have most of it at their house for the grandkids to play games on. This machine included a magical component – one that allowed us to connect with other machines and a vast expanse of information – a modem. We started our online experience with AOL – and for many years this is where we stayed. I was back in college by this time and ahhhh the wonders of Internet research! Oodles of information just a couple key strokes away! No more lugging tons of books, just one or two to supplement my Internet works. Pure Bliss. The best part? I could do my research at midnight in my pajamas. Who could beat that?
Back then, email wasn’t a huge part of our lives, because let’s face it, most of our friends and family didn’t have email. Some did, and some had AIM – and it was great to be able to stay in contact with these distant folks, cause let’s just say it, my letter writing leaves something to be desired.
We did finally move away from AOL, I had learned that I could use Netscape as my browser and not be limited by the AOL design. Eventually, we just tossed AOL altogether. In CA we discovered the wonders of Broadband Cable — ahhhh once again we had hit upon computing bliss. Instant access, no waiting for page loads, easy navigation — it became a must-have in our minds.
By this time we had made friends all over the world and the internet allowed us to stay in touch with all our friends and family. The wonder of eBay encouraged hubby to stock up on enough car parts to build a 3rd M3 if he should need too. He also was connected to a SIG that gave him all the information how to do just that. Great.
In Hawaii I decided one more time to return to college. This time the island of Maui didn’t have the program I wanted – in rides Internet to the rescue. On-line programs meet my educational needs and allowed me to complete my Master’s instead of waiting until we returned to the mainland. While in HI – Ducky (who’s previous fascination with the computer at age 1 & 1/2 should have given us clues) begin her love affair with the computer. She started a Xanga – and developed online friends. She eventually all but abandoned her Xanga for her myspace (traitor) but not before getting me completely hooked on blogging. I’ve made friends here on the pages of Xanga. I keep up with some of my oldest and dearest friends through email and IM programs. I conduct most of my business via the World Wide Web — I order transcripts, plan vacations, buy airline tickets, reserve concert and show seats and look up directions. I check store locations and hours, and sometimes whether or not the item I’m looking for is in the store. I often shop right here at the desk – only leaving to refill my coffee cup. I can even check if books I want are in the library and at what branch they will be at.
The Internet has kept connected, reduced my shopping time, kept me informed and best of all — introduced me to a wide range of fun and interesting people.
All in all – it’s been a good journey, well worth the travel. I can’t wait to see what’s around the next bend!

An interesting entry
We had the Internet installed in 2000 after I left secondary school for obvious reasons
Wow, lookit the SIZE of that thing!
Cuuuute pictures, by the way! : )
It’s hard to imagine doing without them now!
I used to use a computer like that! My first real job in the foodservice business was entering accounts payables using an IBM like that. That was in 1987 and I was 21. It is funny to think of how our lives have changed with computers. Not to mention how we watch movies and listen to music! Gosh, in 1987 I didn’t even own a VCR and I listened to music in the car on cassettes. My how the world has changed.
ryc: We got about a foot of new snow on Monday. Eric, my 8 year old, loves it. He’s started the begging for a snow mobile. I’m just hoping that we get this over with now instead of getting huge snow storms in April, like last year.
That was so much fun to read. I could almost say Ditto but we didn’t build our own computers. I have been able to meet up with a few lost family members and like you, meet wonderful people via the internet. I would not have my son-in-law had we not been on the internet. That also states the obvious that I would not have my beautiful grand daughter. I would be really sad.
Awwww, what cute pictures. Great post!
RYC: There aren’t any Thrifty’s around here. We do have a Rite-Aid which bought out Thrifty’s and I think some of them sell the ice cream. Not sure, but I know I saw ice cream in some Rite-Aid for $.25 scoop.
Ahhh, the smell of rain.
awww adorable pictures:big-smile: good post! im just so glad the computers are here and much better then the past ones.Same here my oldest got me hooked on xanga then went off to myspace as well. have a great day!
LOL that computer is a dinasour if ever I saw one! LOL that was an awesome read, thanks for sharing!
RYC: I’m not, I’m still very upset with the whole situation and even further with the fact that I was dumped off the project and no one even bothered to tell me. I just figured it out a few minutes ago.
RYC: Me too. One big enough to swim in.
What a wonderfully informative post and I adore those sweets pics of Ducky (the name of one of my very favorite characters on NCIS) You did a great job on this topic sweetie! I really enjoyed reading it! Dang it! I had something else to say regarding your comment to me. . now what was that? Shoot! Now I’ll have to go back and read it and then make another comment entry here! Sorry! No, I’ll save this one and just sneak back over to my site. . .one comment, 5 stars! BRB! Ah yes, Xanga themes. . .you know, I’ve tried and it just took too long! Each and every area has it’s own individual setting and I get confused! I was actually going to really make the effort to do everything on one of my sites with the themes, but it became too time consuming! I love making the triples and the html doesn’t work on the themes page. I have seen the result of a triple in my mind on the themes, but it never turns out the way I pictured it in my head! Pfft! I know old dogs can learn new tricks, but how much time do I have to commit to it? I can do a few things here and there, but I guess I just don’t want to commit that much brain power to it!~Jeri
GREAT POST!!!! Love the pictures!
crazy pictures
. my brother had our first computer and no one knew how to use it so it was basically his and his alone. there were so many fights in the house about that thing it is crazy. it wasn’t even a fully computer it was a computer you had to hook up to a tv to be able to work. i mean it was one of the first kinds. and the only thing the entire family did with it was play an olympic game. now im not even sure what the year was or anything other than the fact that it was olympics. iloved paying it with my family though.
ryc: the lady and i got along nicely today i forget she’s a little rough around the edges and it’s a defence mechanism so she doesn’t get hurt. but i am not going o hurt her in any way on purpose or otherwise. i guess she has just had the history and wont’ elave it though.
cool post hon! she looks so sweet
Great entry! And cute pictures too. Thanks for your comment. Randy
What precious pictures… we had a IBM, if you can believe that… which was given to us by the in-laws… it was huge. Son, who is 18 now was about three then, he is brilliant on the computer, just because he has always had access to one. Funny how much technology has changed since the early 80′s… funny and scary.
Hugs, Tricia
Oh, and I typed my college papers, but typed them on a dot matrix printer… I look at them now and laugh.
LOL! I remember talking to friends in China on AIM. It made a little ringy noise with each instant message that still rings in my ears. WOW at the pictures. The personal computer has come such a long way and so has the servers of internet. I’m still with aol. because my husbands emply paid for part of it, but they just dropped that benefit, so I’m dropping aol.
I enjoyed this post!
wow MADE it… and it is so huge – as big as that cute baby! Great entry, thanks for participating!
This is a really great walk down the path of how the internet really has affect our lives… education, shopping, blogging… especially keeping in touch with people we never would have without it. Making friends we’d never have made all over the world – it’s so much a part of my life and I am so thankful for it.
ryc: I’m still sipping chocolate coffee now; when I move to Wisconsin will you send me some Hawaii sunshine?:dancingcow:<<<< in exchange for cheese
ok, i already saw this. LOL! I was looking at links from Featured Grown Ups, didn’t want you to think I was stalking….LOL!!!!!!!!
I still have some of those old computers…….Although I have transfered the data and taken the
stuff I have wanted from them. I too have built and transformed a computer. I want a new
one right now but have the capability to build one…….and may again.
very cute photos!
Dear Annette,
I’ve always called a computer a “typewriter with pictures”. For me, the “device” itself is a great tool that replaces printing, imaging, and distribution, and coupled with the internet, the computer is a typewriter with pictures and a phone with a worldwide connection. I love your first computer. I bought a word processing machine while compuers were still running Windows 3.2. My first personal computer had Windows 95.
I was always on the forefront of my webbased design, to the chagrin of people with dialup everywhere. Even when I only had dialup, I was designing pages with streaming video and broadband content, so my pages tended to crash a lot of puters.
It can only get better.

This was fun. I have a Frankenstein…and am all for them. You get what you want, without messing with what you don’t need. I think I’m going to be talked into Mac for the next one, though…those clever commercials, the two-screen option (great for my work), the dependability…
I liked both of these “remember when” blogs. We were never on the cutting edge, as we grew up poor. But I have had a computer in my home since about 1986 or so. Chris was playing Reader Rabbit when he was 2, and is practically attached at the wrists to the one in his room now. All of ours are Frankensteins, except for mine, which Ali built especially for me. Much, much cheaper, and more individualized.
Absolutely LOVE the pics of Ducky!
Cute Ducky! :camera:
