  • Well…. let’s  not go  into my day. It’s already been quite disappointing. All I can say is ONLY 3 MORE MONTHS! Woot.

So…. in that frame of mind, I will go ahead and do the Featured Grownups  topic 2 for the month (I was so swamped I couldn’t get to the first one – )

    School Days

Sharememories, stories, life changing teachers or events from your SchoolDays.  Be it Grade School, High School or Home School.  With all agegroups participating this could be so much fun!

Wow! My school days are my entire life. It seems like I’vealways been in school! Since I’m a teacher, when I’m not in school I’m teachingschool. And since I home schooled my children for 5 years — that part appliestoo. I can’t even begin to put it all down, but I thought I would pick a fewmemories and share them…the good, bad and the life-changing.

    THE GOOD:
    College:

Drinking coffee in the student lounge, discussing art, literature, history and architecture.

Riding the bus at 5:30 amafter staying out ’till 1 am dancingand hanging out with friends.

Having freedom to come and go as I please.

Being responsible for my own learning.

Being exposed to literature, art, history, cultures, and avariety of challenging skills.

    High School:

    Friends

    The parking lot (*ahem)

The few teachers that were truly interested and interesting.(Mr. Elmer and Mr. Goodwin — Mr. Goodwin did imitations of vultures and Hitlerand used accents like a german accent while discussing WWII — he made lecturesfun.)

Marching Band. (we were good, I loved playing at footballgames — loved competing and winning, and traveling with the band and lots ofgood friends)

    THE BAD

    College:

    Tuition — OUCH!

Book — cost and weight (lugging them around sucked!) –Double OUCH!

Amount of work (OK – this falls in Good and Bad and LifeChanging!)

    High School:

Classes — if only we didn’t have classes high school wouldhave been much better!

Teachers — with the exception of Mr. Elmer and Mr. Goodwin.

Attendance policies — Why be there every day when I’m notlearning anything?

Pointless homework — Again — why bother?

The parking lot — OK — my favorite place the first twoyears, I  winded up landing in Rehab as aresult and was a place to avoid that last year!

Marching Band — Rodeo parade – it’s a rodeo parade — read:LOTS of horses — for those of you with marching experience you know what thismeans….it means lots of steaming piles. Our Director was a fanatic about manythings, one was how we marched at parades, this meant no sidestepping and nobreaking marching time. This means that white shoes were brown and had to bescrubbed clean before our next inspection. YUCK.

    THE LIFE CHANGING

    High School

Graduating early (I had to get out of there!)

Mr. Elmer (read about him here)

Traveling with the marching band and being part of asuccessful team of musicans. We won many state and regional competitions andmarched in the Rose Bowl Parade and the Disney land New Year’s parade. Thosedays were unforgettable!

    College:

Opening my mind through education, learning about newplaces, people, things and ideas.

Learning that I can accomplish much more than I’ve everexpected.

    Graduating!!!

Please stop by Featured_Grownups and read the other memories about School!

Question of the day:  What was your favorite or least favorite  part of school?

Comments (30)

  • Great post, I have not done mine yet because school gives me a tummy ache. :steamed:

  • Great post.  I love Hawaii.  Kauai is probably my favorite Island.  Maui is great too but I could do without the celebreties and their paparazzi.  You are fortuneate to live in such a beauty-filled place with so many interesting cultures.

    Peace.

  • My Daddy once accused me of trying to be a professional student, but admitted that it was their fault because they sent me to school a year early! My feeling was, it is a good job if you can get it! Why head into the real world? So here I am, still in an academic setting after all these years. It is the best of times, and the worst of times……..

  • It is shocking the parallels I see in your experiences and mine… it really is ironic that we teach, don’t you think… and after a day like today, I am not sure I am making any difference. It makes my head hurt :hammer: :hammer: :hammer: :hammer:
Thanks for dropping by. I am going to add you… I suspect we will have things to talk about.

    Hugs, Tricia :big-smile:

  • I like this entry, how it compares highschool and college. . .good and bad.

Reminds me of my own (not that I’m doing for college since I never went) but for my “lastest school entry” lol I talked about the similarities and difference between school (where I used to go to) and the library (where I hang out 7 days a week!)

I had a few real good teachers. . .but yeah. . .the most weren’t.  I mean, they “did their job”.  Blah.  I guess “the great” will always be limited to a select few. . .but to think how much different schooling would have been if ever teacher was a great fun interesting teacher.

The one year I actually didn’t mind going to school was 5th grade (that teacher was fun)

Then for middleschoool I had a teacher that gave great lectures/discussions, and was all about “I’m not going to tell you what to think, you must figure it out for yourself.”  Teachers like that are great. . .

Strangely, in highshool 2 of my favorite teachers were ones I initially started out hating. ONE of them, I had for a whole year of freshman honor’s english. . .uh. . .yet sophomore year (she was “retiring” but that year decided to teach ONE class only, and it was the sophmore english class I had!  I actually liked her)

Same for another teacher. . .only I only had her for a year. . and first semester not so much. . .hated.  . .but by second semester.  Both of these teachers were ones that “pushed” you, sometimes it seemed they were too. . .a n a l. . .but once you got used to them taking things seriously (prep for college I guess?)

  • Great post………….and my list favorite part of school…………..snobs………LOL

  • the differences are quite unique and I like them for a change…I’ve only had some college, but since it was my senior year I didn’t have all the costs that my daughter did when she went…and the cost of books is extreamly enourmous…great post…have a good one…Smile

  • The best part of high school was when it was over.

  • I  enjoyed your post!!

about Eric Clapton…I have never seen him perform but he has always been a favorite of mine.  He is so talented.

  • I enjoyed school, I don’t really have any life changing stories about it, it was what it was.
    I wouldn’t want to go back….lol…..

  • Wonderful contribution:dancingcow:

  • my favorite part of school was just before class where I would walk and chat nonstop with my friends. I have verbal diarrhea remember?

ryc:not only did Flat Stanley make it back, he was a super hit! The teacher convinced Alyssa that the stickers and the calendar were willed to the classroom by what you wrote in the letter. Alyssa was fixing on running out of the classroom with the hula dancing animal stickers. The teacher is gonna save the fish coloring book and the stickers for their ‘pretend trip to Hawaii’
at the end of the school year. The calendar is hanging up on the door to the class as you come in. Alyssa was promised the first pick of a hula sticker for all this though.. :wink-wink:
Thanks for sending it out so quickly! Most of the class seems to be waiting on theirs. I am lucky that I don’t have to fall into that category!

  • RYC:  I was the same way in college.  Stop boring me to tears by spoon feeding me the syllabus.  Assume I can read and get on with the teaching.  Power points bore me.  Most of them the speaker only reads off the points…never elaborates to make it interesting.  Another underused tool to keep us mindless drones.

Least favorite part of school…..8 AM start time.  A joy compared to the 5 AM subbing calls I now receive…LOL

    HUGS!!!!!

  • Marching band is a great thing for kids to get into.  I know it really helped my daughter make the transition into a High School a lot easier, since she already knew so many of the older kids.

My least favorite part of school was gym class!

  • There must be something about marching band because my hubby was in our high school marching band and loved it too.  Those would be some of his fondest memories…

I have few good memories of high school.  I look back on them as wasted years because I had an affection for things I shouldn’t have.  Like beer, wine, etc., and I did poorly in school because I was just stupid.  I didn’t get involved in high school groups because I worked as much as I could.  I hated high school and was determined to graduate early (I did) and I married a year later.  I never went to college.

  • Just wanted to come by and thank you for your comment, it is much appreciated.  I’m kind of surprized by you having heard that about her. . .I hadn’t , but I don’t keep up too well.  I guess it’s kind of good to know I’m not the only one. . .now she is saying that I’ve been sending her emails, which is not true at all!  *shakes head* I just don’t understand it at all!  Thank you soooo much!~K.K.

  • Great post!Brought back memories of my school. THere where some great teachers and teachers i couldnt stand.I just remembering hanging out with friends and have a good time.Have a great day!

  • very nice post and great insight.

favorite school memory – being in choir and traveling with them

least favorite school memory – mean students

  • i was a cheerleader and we won the state competition….it was great fun!!!

hope you have a wonderful day sweetie!!!!!!  :dancingcow:

  • I loved everything about High School.  Ditching, being in the band, going on trips.  Performing at Disneyland and the Rose Parade.  We were there in 1984.  What year did you march?  We would perform at D-Land every year sometimes twice and I would go with the choir too.  It was always so much fun.  Such a great feeling of freedom.  Classes were ok too.  I had different people in different classes doing my work for me.  Bad I know.  Mostly fluff classes that I didn’t want to take anyway.  Have a great day

  • I remember thinking “why bother” a lot during high school, too. Especially senior year. I found myself skiing a lot that year, rather than being at school. Oops.

  • Just popping in to say hello… :birdie: :birdie: :birdie: :birdie: :birdie: :birdie:

    Hugs, Tricia

  • Thanks for visiting.  College was a flurry to me.  All I did was studying, studying, and studying:)

  • :so-cool:

Great memories! Did you ever tell your teacher about the impact he had on your life? My favourite part of school was English and Art/Photography – we had really inspiring teachers for those subjects. The part I hated about school was being bullied relentlessly because I just didn’t fit in.

Thank you so much for your comments.

  • Thank you very much! I love Maui and well, all of Hawaii in general! :) I bet it’s great living there..

  • Sounds like you had a good time in college and high school. That’s great to have good memories. :dancingcow: I just put that in cause I like the dancing cow.

  • I liked all of your pros and cons!

  • i love this take on the topic! tho… i’m afraid i wouldn’t be marching thru horse poop for anyone! O.o
