So last week we went on Thursday to load in for the Counting Crows concert at the Mercedes-Benz Championship at Kapalua. We have a friend who owns a local staging company. My hubby helps out as frequently as he can. I helped load out last year at the Mercedes after watching Glen Frey and Joe Walsh. This year they needed help with both. We set up the stage (a large area with 3 separate risers for drums, backup vocals and a bridging area between), 6 scaffolding towers for curtains and small stage in the back for sound controls. It was a lot of fun and a lot of hard work. On Saturday morning we got up at 2:30 am to get down there and for load out. Because of the lapse between the concert and load out times we didn’t attend the show this year. Our plan was to rest up on Saturday and then we had tickets for the final round of the Open on Sunday.
We ended up going to dinner and grocery shopping Sat. night. On the way home I was felling yucky. I mentioned I wasn’t feeling good and hubby said I was just tired. I tried to explain how this had nothing to do with tiredness — that I was getting sick, but he wasn’t listening. This is happening a lot lately. He thinks he knows what’s right and true. But, he doesn’t because he DOESN’T listen!! The upside to that for me is that I get to point out his fallacies frequently by engaging in the age-old wifely duties of saying “I told you so” (read in a sing-song voice, especially since I enjoy it so much). At any rate, I woke up in the middle of the night by getting up to get sick. By morning I was running a fever.
I wisely decided to stay home rather than traipsing all over the hills of Kapulua and making myself truly miserable. Hubby went with friends and enjoyed himself. It was best that way since I got to stay at home, wrapped in a blanket (when I wasn’t sweating) and watching sappy movies on TV all day.
Happily, I am much better, well enough to clean and cook (DARN IT).

I’m embarrassed (not really but it sounds good) to say I’ve spent most of the last 3 days with my nose in a book. I only say most because yesterday morning about 9:30 I finished Twilight and had to wait till this morning before I could start New Moon (and finished it about seven, it was REALLY good).
So – to the Twilight series….
or as I often say “Two Thumbs way high”. I can’t wait for the next book. Seems like I’m always waiting on books. I’ve waited on books for the Dragonlance series, the Belgariad, The Mallorean, the Elder Gods, The Incarnations of Immortality, the Harry Potter Books, Eragon and now Twilight. Phfff.
So, since I’m talking about my reading addiction, I’ll go ahead and deal with the Featured_Grownups topic:

Something most of the Xanga Community does not know
- are you an amazing musician?
- Are you a clutz
- Do you take amazing pictures

It doesn’t have to be a current event and can be more than one thing… you set the rules — funny, serious, heart felt — it’s up to you
So, my something after thinking for several days will be about reading. I’m an avid – almost rabid reader. I love Fantasy, but will compulsively read most anything. If I’m in your house I will read all the things on your counter, posted on your fridge etc. In offices I read every sign, every piece of paper laying around and anything else that has print on it. Even in foreign countries I compulsively try to decipher the signs written in foreign languages because there is print posted there for me to read.
Not only do I read compulsively and avidly, I read quickly. Actually, most people would say I read lightening fast. I used to read romance books for “light reading” often in just a couple of hours I’d read a whole book. They were like comics to me. They were easy to read and didn’t take any concentration as they are so predicable and fun. For books I really enjoy, I completely tune out of the real world. Often you have to come and physically nudge me to get my attention. I see it in my head –the whole thing, like a movie that just keeps running. This brings me to the thing that most bothers my hubby about my reading…
when reading to myself, I skip all the little words. All of the ofs, thes, bys, ands, etc. My eyes also are ahead of my brain. This is usually obvious when I read out loud, as most mistakes are when I start reading the line my eyes are on before I actually get there in the story — does that make any sense? I also can remember where in the book, on what side of the page and approximately where on the page my favorite events are.
So, basically, I’m a reading freak. I know there are others out there like me, my father for one, my eldest daughter for another and several other folks I’ve met. Not a bad thing. Just a thing.
There you go, something you didn’t know about me.

Question for the day:
Avid reader, recreational reader, or reading only when forced?

Everyday fun and pains
Well another eventful day in paradise!
* shopped with Christmas money for Squirt — quite a haul of 2 jeans, 2 shirts, 1 pair capri — ganga prices.
* Stopped at Borders to utilize gift cards. Got the first book of the Twilight series recommended by thefoursome, who by the way is in recovery from her elective surgery…please wish her well!
* Went to the Periodontists, who after an examination concluded I would probably have to lose some of my teeth….sigh. This is what happens when you avoid dentists for decades.
* Hubby bent the pretty red beamer by running into another car
* storm and rain coming in — yuck
* found out that dear friends D and C and the twins are coming (aka ThisIsBullDookie) will be here the end of January for a two week visit — HOORAY (actually found that out yesterday).
* ordered textbooks for classes, although one class has no text listed at the book store — hopefully I don’t need one!
* Moved files from desktop and hubby is reformatting and reloading.
Regular everyday stuff. Nothing major. You should have seen me negotiating with the counter help at Wendy’s — that was just about hysterical. You ever get that feeling that nothing you are saying..not one word, is getting through? That you are speaking some undecipherable language and the other person is trying to determine your thoughts through you facial expressions and osmosis? Yeah..it was like that.
Tomorrow I start my new regime, trying to get into my school schedule… which will include walking the dog, going to the beach, reading and working out every day.
So what about you guys? Plans for the new year?

Auld Lang Syne
The song, “Auld Lang Syne,” is sung at the stroke of midnight in almost every English-speaking country in the world to bring in the new year. At least partially written by Robert Burns in the 1700′s, it was first published in 1796 after Burns’ death. Early variations of the song were sung prior to 1700 and inspired Burns to produce the modern rendition. An old Scotch tune, “Auld Lang Syne” literally means “old long ago,” or simply, “the good old days.”
Course, I had to find a little more upbeat version for my site…. what can I say? Old rockers never die they just rock on.
It’s that time again. The time to reflect on the past year and to consider our hopes, dreams and goals for the coming year. You know what? I resolve to:
NOT MAKE ANY RESOLUTIONS!!!!
So there you have it. I will rebel against the traditions of making unrealistic expectations based on projections that have no way of calculating the impact of various life situations I will find myself in and that set me up to be disappointed in myself.
So.
There.
Ha.
Our plans for the evening include church, dinner, and some small explosives for the front yard. Nothing huge or pulse raising, just family ringing in the New Year. I’m looking forward to it!
New Year’s plans for you?? Stay in or head out and party?
I wish everyone a great New Year and a happy and safe New Year’s celebration!
