Dirty, Dusty, Crooked, Muddy and Gutsy
It is the Xterra 10K Makena Scramble. What’s a Scramble?
Scram·ble (intransitive verb)
Definition: To clamber over rough terrain; to move uninhibited; to
travel, go, locomote in a disorderly fashion; to free yourself from the
ordinary and run wild!
Basically, it’s a 10 K run on Xterraroids.
In their own words:
Runners begin with an ascent up the south slope of Haleakala into
the desert-like environment; all the while, the hot temperature
enlightens racers why it is named “House of the Sun”. After a pass
though Cactus Alley, competitors are treated to a run on the white
sands of Makena Beach, famed as one of the most beautiful beaches in
the world. The course continues through the “spooky” forest
adorned with kiawe thorns and leads to a striking black sand beach, but
beware, because the final leg is ornamented with grapefruit-sized
cobblestones and lava rocks that are infamous for grabbing and twisting
unsuspecting ankles. So, what’s the point of my little discourse on the 10K Xterra Scramble? Hubby and some of his friends went out yesterday and tried to kill themselves with this “little” run. Actually they had a great time while I and another wife hung out on the beach relaxing. We made up to the finish line to snap some pictures and welcome the returning warriors!I’m very proud of hubby — not so bad for a guy in his late forties!!
Then we came home and started moving the fridges. We have two, one that we take everywhere because we love it so much, and the crappy one the landlord has in the house. Well the crappy one started doing an extra crappy job. I got tired of throwing food away because it kept spoiling so I asked hubby to switch them. Cost of living is high enough here without throwing away milk, cheese and other misc. food stuffs and having to replace them regularly. Why hubby choose yesterday to do this heavy duty menial task — no clue. But it’s done. We cleaned both fridges out thoroughly, and got rid of all the food that needed to be disposed of. Boy did hubby sleep well!
So did I. It’s been a busy week. Had MAJOR problems with the charter school (That’s a whole nother blog — I almost had an aneurysm dealing with them), but Squirt starts normal school tomorrow anyway. She’s excited and nervous. I think she’ll be just fine. The real bummer is on Friday afternoon a home-school mom called, she had heard about Squirt through a mutual homeschool friend and had some questions for me. Her daughter is small for her age, 13, and thinking about going to same Intermediate school Squirt will be at. If we had hooked up 2 years ago, Squirt would have had a friend that was her age, home-schooled, and liked many of the things that she does……aaaarrrrrghhh.
Murphy’s Law right?
We have another busy day today, so I’m off to catch up and comment and then to get ready to go.Question of the day:
Sports with a side of extreme or hold the extreme please?

I bet Squirt will do just fine. I know she will make griends easily. Hold the extreme please. Yay for hubby. Wow I wouldn’t want to throw any food away either. I have heard it is really expensive there. Have a good one
Squirt will do just fine, she’s going to make lots of nice friends too.
Good for hubby :goodjob: I bet he did sleep good after the day he put in.
RYC: Joanna had a wonderful wedding shower :) I think she got just about every thing from her shower list. Igot a few thing for myself too and that will go towards her gifts points yea
Yeah, I’m gonna pass on that race. Good for him though!!!! Hope he got a cool t-shirt out of it. Squirt will be alright…they’re highly adjustable at that age…she’ll bounce. Don’t worry, mama, enjoy that “free” time!
God has a reason for timing things the way He does, so don’t fret too much. I bet the years of homeschooling have made Squirt a very strong person, so she will do fine at school!
Wow, that race makes me tired just thinking about it. I think Squirt will do well in school. Moving a fridge, is a lot of work. I like the game rugby. Well I like watching it.
I think she’ll be fine, everyone likes the new kid. All the girls will be fighting over her.
:goodjob:yeah for hubby!! Hold the extreme for me i couldnt do it. im sure she will be fine and she will meet so many friends and she will have a blast. Have a great day!
When I saw Xterra scramble I thought, “are they racing Nissans?” LOL I used to have an Xterra so that automatically came to mind!
RYC: I LOVE marching season!! I’m sure you can tell. My son is graduating next year, so I’m sure I will keep a video camera in his face the whole time! I’m glad you liked the videos. Isn’t my baby just great? LOL I’m not biased, not one little bit!!
RYC: I know…it’s the 15 minutes of everything I have to catch up on…not even really time for that either!!! So now I have a couple hours of 15 minute jobs to do saved up…take it you’re doing this too? Not the failing horribly, but Flylady thing? And, yes, my sink is a little shiny…we have a constant drip, so I just give up until night-time…stupid sink.
hold the extreme for me…but if my family wants to…i say go for it!!!!
Thanks for your comments on homework. I’ll give that a try!
My hubby is into bass fishing and hunting. He could just do the lazy guy thing, but he doesn’t. He does these tournaments that go from dawn till dusk. During hunting, he walks the woods for as long as there’s daylight. When I say woods, I mean nothing except trees for miles and miles in the Northwest corner of Maine. Not me!
WAY TO GO! for your husband and hold the extreme for me. I’de rather be on the beacj with you…
No regrets about the past and finding friends when…God knows what He’s doing and could have brought this person into your life 2 years ago, if He so wished…but He didn’t. rest in that…
Your daughter is going to be fine at school. You have given her a solid start and she will finish strong. Keep her always in your prayers and trust God with this one.
yeah, for getting rid of the crummy fridge-who can afford to keep replacing food? I have heard the cost of living there is expensive, so it sounds like you had a productive weekend.
fun to watch extreme sports but i would never participate
